Here are some sleep headphones designed to fit more comfortably in your ears than traditional earbuds.
They block or cancel out noise, and provide specialized meditation content instead of (or in addition to) your favorite music.
We’ve rounded some popular pairs. While we acknowledge that fit and comfort can be subjective depending on the size of your ears and the type of sleeper you are (back or side), our personal experience has shown us that we’ve found one great pair that will help a wide range of people get a better night’s sleep.
1. Philips Sleep Headphones with Kokoon
These Kokoon Nightbuds are the company’s second iteration, and while they’re certainly more comfortable, I still didn’t like the idea of sleeping with the cable behind my neck.
Again, sleeping is a completely subjective experience, and while the new, thinner earbuds felt good enough in my ears, the generally unwieldy design of a bulky volume module that’s secured to the back of my head via a bulky cable just didn’t do it for me.
The new Nightbuds comes with five different sizes of eartips, so at least you’ll be able to find the right ones to block out all the unwanted noise.
I also like the updated app, which detects when you fall asleep and then gradually fades out the selected noise, or adjusts to “colored noise” when it detects that you’re asleep.
You can choose from a library of built-in sounds in four categories (fall asleep, anxiety, sleep disruption, and brighter morning), or you can listen to your own music or audio.
You can also set a sleep schedule with an alarm to wake you up in the morning.
2. DubsLabs Bedphones Wireless
One of the biggest obstacles to wearing headphones in bed is the disgusting feeling of waking up with earbuds in.
Hate that! So I tried the Bedphones from DubsLabs, and they’re a fantastic solution to that problem.
The on-ear hooks mean they won’t disappear into your pillow in the morning, and the flat speaker pads let your ears breathe all night long. Now waking up with headphones in is less jarring and more natural.
They sound great on your ears, but if you don’t want to be tethered to your phone all night long, there’s an option to purchase the Bedphones Wireless for an additional $60.
3. QuietOn 3.1 Sleep Earbuds
The QuietOn 3.1 is more of a high-end pair of active noise-canceling earplugs than an all-purpose sleep device.
The QuietOn 3.1 earbuds are standalone, meaning they don’t use Bluetooth to pair with an app, don’t help track your sleep, and don’t include any additional sounds to mask noise.
Instead, they use ANC to block out outside noise, and they’re made of soft foam instead of hard plastic elements like other sleep-oriented earbuds I’ve tried.
I found the soft material to be difficult to fit securely. It’s very different from traditional headphones, and I’m not sure they still perform at their best after three nights.
They weren’t comfortable and fell out of my ears several times. The company will replace the earbuds for €80 plus €20 shipping (about $87 plus $22 shipping), but you’ll have to contact customer service directly.
The QuietOn’s noise-canceling feature is very effective at filtering out most low-frequency noises, like traffic noise and snoring, and it feels strangely isolated compared to earbuds that play white noise or ambient sound.
However, if you’re looking for complete silence, these might be just what you’re looking for. That wasn’t the case for us.
Unfolding the sleek white oval charging case reveals two lightweight plastic earbuds with no flaps, making them the smallest of the models we tested.
They also feature almost no Bluetooth transmitter or other components, making them the smallest.
According to QuietOn, battery life is around 28 hours on a single charge, with the case providing an additional two nights of use.
4. Fulext Sleep Headphones Bluetooth V5.2 Headphones
The Fulext Sleep Headphones are designed as a multi-functional solution combining a headband, headphones, and sleep mask.
These Bluetooth headphones feature a built-in microphone and ultra-thin stereo speakers, making them ideal for a variety of activities such as sleep, exercise, or travel.
The headband is made of lightweight, breathable material, making it comfortable to wear all night long, especially for side sleepers who need something that won’t press on their ears.
The device uses Bluetooth 5.2 technology to connect to a variety of iOS and Android devices, providing wireless convenience.
The rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours on a single charge, making it ideal for overnight use. The headband is washable, and the speakers are easily removable for cleaning.
This product is especially useful for those who listen to white noise or music to block out external sounds such as snoring.
5. LC-dolida Sleep Mask Headphones
LC-dolida offers a sleep mask with built-in Bluetooth headphones that is designed to block out light while providing a comfortable fit for side sleepers.
The mask uses ice silk material, known for its breathability and cooling properties, to help users stay comfortable all night long.
It also features a blackout design with a unique nose bridge that blocks out almost all light, making it perfect for anyone looking to improve their sleep quality, whether at home, while traveling, or meditating.
The headphones feature Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in microphone for hands-free calling, providing a versatile approach to relaxation and sleep.
The sleep mask is washable and the speakers can be adjusted to avoid putting pressure on the ears, especially for side sleepers.
With over 10 hours of playback on a full charge, you can enjoy uninterrupted audio all night long. The LC-dolida comes with additional accessories such as earplugs and a storage bag.
6. WINONLY Sleep Headphones Bluetooth Headband
WINONLY Sleep Headphones are designed with side sleepers in mind. They combine Bluetooth headphones, sleep mask, and a soft headband that works as wireless earbuds.
The ultra-thin speakers are embedded in the fabric, so you won’t feel uncomfortable even when you’re lying on your side.
They also include a built-in microphone for hands-free calls and volume and song control options.
The headband is made of a stretchy, soft fabric that fits a variety of head sizes without putting pressure on your ears.
These headphones are wireless and feature Bluetooth 5.2 technology, providing wireless range and a battery life of up to 12 hours on a single charge.
They can be used as a sports headband for sleep, and exercise, or as an eye mask to block out light when relaxing or traveling. You can wash the device after removing the headphones.
7. HoomBand’s Bluetooth Sleep Headphones
If you don’t want to use earbuds and an eye mask, consider the less invasive HoomBand’s Bluetooth Sleep Headphones.
Again, sleeping comfortably on my side is my top priority, and these headphones fit perfectly. The Velcro fasteners keep the fit snug, and the breathable mesh material keeps them comfortable.
Bulky speakers are often a problem with Sleep Headphones, but the HoomBand’s speakers are housed in the thermoformed foam of the headband.
They’re relatively flat and can be moved and repositioned, so they weren’t as distracting as I thought they would be.
If you’re looking for something with sleep sounds, guided meditations, or sleep stories, the HoomBand app has a comprehensive library.
You’ll find over 100 hours of content created by sleep experts, including hypnotherapists and sleep doctors.
But if you prefer to listen to ’80s power ballads (you know who you are), it’s also compatible with popular music apps like Apple and Spotify.
One thing to note, though, is that while you can turn the device on and off from the headband, you can’t adjust the volume. That could be a deal-breaker for some.
The headband offers decent sound quality, but if you’re looking for noise isolation or active noise cancellation, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
After testing a range of sleep headphones and earbuds, I found these to be the worst at actually blocking out ambient noise.
I could hear my dog snoring as clearly as day. Turning up the volume can help, but doing so defeats the purpose and can have a major impact on your hearing in the long run.
8. Toppoint Wireless Eyemask
This off-brand model sticks out and can be found online by several sellers. It’s an all-in-one system that combines an eye mask and headphones into one package.
Many people will love this product because it eliminates the need to fumble for two items instead of one in the dark.
I was skeptical at first, but it held up well, costs less than $20, and lasts nine hours on a single charge.
However, there are noticeable differences in quality and design between this product and our top-rated Sleepphones.
This product is a little less sturdy and the speakers are much thicker, which might make it a little uncomfortable on a hard pillow.
9. Sony WF-1000XM5
Sony’s WF-1000XM5 is a solid, high-end option that feels both luxurious and solid. A particularly well-specified set of wireless earbuds for sleep.
They come with four different eartip sizes to choose from, and our optimized earbud tip test ensures that wearers get the best fit possible.
This next-generation flagship has a low-profile design and proved highly comfortable over long periods of time during our testing.
Powerful active noise-canceling performance, LDAC support for high-quality music streaming via Bluetooth, customizable ambient listening modes, digital assistant support, and full EQ customization make these some of the most versatile earbuds available today.
10. Soundcore on Anker Sleep A20 Earbuds
A good pair of sleep earbuds should be nearly invisible in your ears while you sleep. After wearing these earbuds for several nights, the new Soundcore A20 sleep earbuds were about as invisible as they could get.
As a side sleeper, I had no trouble wearing these earbuds while I slept, as the flat ends of the earbuds didn’t put pressure on my ears or cause any discomfort that would keep me from sleeping.
The A20s have a longer battery life than their predecessor, the A10, a new Find My Earbuds feature, and improved Twin Seal eartips for noise isolation.
But while the update makes the earbuds easier to use, they’re still not without their drawbacks.
This product is not suitable for blocking out environmental noises such as a snoring partner, a busy street view from the bedroom, or a neighbor playing loud music upstairs.
I would not recommend this product for someone; who wants to darken a noisy bedroom environment, or someone who already has a quiet sleep environment and is looking for a comfortable pair of earbuds to fall asleep to while listening to audiobooks, music, or other soundscapes.
11. Sony WF-1000XM4
The Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds are a great choice for bass lovers who want a rich audio experience.
I found that they had noticeably more bass than the other headphones I tested, and the adjustable EQ lets you boost or lower the bass at night.
The active noise cancellation is excellent, and the battery life is slightly better than the AirPods Pro 2, with up to eight hours of playback.
The larger design and comfortable memory foam tips, available in three sizes, make them great for back sleepers and everyday use, but less practical for side sleepers.
There’s a voice-activated assistant to easily adjust settings at night, and the touch controls make navigation simple.
12. SnoozeBand Max
Side sleepers rule the world. Just kidding, but studies show that most of us are side sleepers. Finding the right sleep headphones for this demographic can be tricky, but the SnoozeBand MAX gets it right.
Featuring soft jersey knit fabric, adjustable eyecups that effectively block out ambient light, and a nearly invisible speaker that can be positioned to suit your needs, the SnoozeBand MAX are the best sleep headphones for side sleepers.
These sleep headphones are a sleep mask and headphone combo, like the Manta Sound Sleep Mask.
Plus, the eyecups are removable, so you can wear the SnoozeBand MAX as an eye mask or a headband, depending on your preference.
Like many of our top picks, you can enjoy your favorite sleep sounds, audiobooks, guided meditations, or whatever you like, thanks to the built-in wireless headphones via Bluetooth connectivity.
For those who don’t want to think too much, the SnoozeBand MAX comes preloaded with 10 sleep sounds that you can listen to directly from the headband without having to connect to another device.
The SnoozeBand MAX also has an automatic timer. Double-clicking the power button will automatically turn the device off after an hour or two.
So, if you’re a side sleeper looking for a pair of sleep earbuds, the SoundCore A20 is the way to go. But if you’re a side sleeper who wants a mask and headphone combo, the SnoozeBand MAX is a solid choice.
13. Perytong Sleep Headphone
These Perytong Bluetooth headphones are designed for sleep, and while they may look similar at first glance to the other headband-style models on this list, there are a few things that set them apart and make them one of the best.
The control system is right in front of your head, so it doesn’t matter which side you’re lying on. You can easily control them in any position.
They also have a breathable mesh inner liner, which I found very comfortable. Other companies use a firmer fabric that collects sweat instead of wicking it away like the Perytongs do.
Finally, the price is unbeatable. They always seem to undercut their competitors, but in my experience, they’re actually a better product.
Now, if they could include wireless charging, sleep phones would have gone out of business by now.
The headband has a decent battery life of 10 hours on a full charge and comes in over 15 color options. These sleep headphones are great for listening to music while you run or just sitting around meditating.
14. Maxrock Sleep Earbuds
With their ultra-light design and soft silicone eartips, these minimalist earbuds are a great travel-friendly sleep earbud.
The eartips are ergonomically designed with a double layer to fit most ears and effectively block out ambient noise.
At the same time, the mini speaker on each earbud provides high-quality, balanced sound without being too bass-heavy.
They are not flat, so they are not suitable for side sleepers, but if you are a back sleeper or need something to block out ambient noise on a plane or train, these headphones are a good choice.
They are also very affordable, so if you lose them on the road, it won’t be a big deal.
15. Cozyphones
The Cozyphones are a budget-friendly wired headband alternative to Bluetooth headphones. I think the only real reason to choose the Cozyphones over the SleepPhones or Musicozy is the wired connection.
The small speakers are relatively unobtrusive and comfortable in all sleeping positions, but there’s noticeably less headband padding than the SleepPhones.
The audio quality is basic and the bass is minimal, but they offer a simple option for quiet bedtime listening.
There’s no active noise cancellation and your bed partner might notice some sound leakage if you turn up the volume.
16. Anker Sleep A10 Earbuds
The Anker Sleep A10 Earbuds Soundcore are small and lightweight.
Unlike other bulky options, they fit completely in your ears, so you don’t have to worry about the earbuds moving around or falling out when you flip them over at night.
Comfort is important, especially for side sleepers, as other earbuds tend to make a scratching noise when they touch the pillow.
In our testing, these sleep earbuds don’t actively block out noise. Instead, they passively block out ambient noise, and your choice of sound options does the rest.
These sleep earbuds provide a wide range of sleep sounds you’d expect, from white or brown noise to familiar nature sounds like rain or crashing waves.
With Bluetooth connectivity, you can also play music from your phone (or whatever you like) while you sleep. Keep in mind that playing music will drain the battery faster.
The preloaded sounds will get you through the night, but the music will only get you a few hours of sleep. At just $90, these are some of the most feature-rich and best sleep earbuds around.
17. Dubslabs Bedphones
The Dubslabs Bedphones are a practical pair of headphones to wear in bed when you need to be alert to kids, alarms, doorbells, or other noises at home.
The flat, padded speakers hang over your ears without being covered or placed in them.
I found that I could hear outside noise much more clearly with these headphones than with other headphones, especially when I kept the volume low.
The speaker quality is clear enough for quiet listening, like podcasts, and they come in wired and wireless options.
There’s no active noise cancellation, and the design naturally allows for some noise leakage.
Overall, I think these are great for people who don’t want booming bass and want to play audio quietly without completely blocking out the world.
Conclusion
In conclusion, finding the right headphones for side sleeping can make a big difference in how comfortable and restful your nights are.
Whether you like to fall asleep to music, podcasts, or white noise, it’s important to choose headphones that won’t dig into your ears or cause discomfort when you lie down.
With a variety of options available, from thin clip-on designs to soft over-ear styles, there’s something for everyone.
When choosing, consider the most important things to you, such as sound quality, comfort, and how well they stay in place at night.
The right headphones will help you relax, block out snoring or other distractions, and help you fall asleep peacefully.
